“Let others lead small lives, but not you. Let others argue over small things, but not you. Let others cry over small hurts, but not you. Let others leave their future in someone else’s hands, but not you.” Jim Rohn

Traffic SchoolToday’s post is the first part in a series I would like to call “Traffic School.”  Due to the fact that I am a brand spanking new blogger and I have yet to drive traffic to my blog, I have been doing some digging to find the best information for generating traffic to your website….without spending any money.  As a new blogger, you have to start somewhere.  This is going to be fun, right?!  I am very appreciative to all the bloggers who have so graciously shared everything they have found to be helpful, without holding back information.  I have no desire whatsoever to feed you potato chips and call it filet mignon.

Secret #1: Create Great Content

Awww. You are adorable.  You thought the first secret was to get some widget, buy some thing, pay me some money, or make balloons out of animals and hand them to strangers.  Nope.  You have to create something worth reading.  Add value to your consumer.  Don’t put up junk and expect your garage sale to make you a million dollars.  The internet is already full of scammers, frauds, cheats, and liars.  Please don’t be one of those people.

Secret #2: Take Action

None. Of. This. Matters. If. You. Don’t. DO SOMETHING.  Focus on the things that actually work.  Then do more of what works.  It’s that simple and that hard all at the same time.  This blog is a reflection of me finally taking action after spending the past year thinking about what I want to do, pondering over how to do it, and reading about others who have done it.  That is crazy nonsense.  If I had just started…anywhere… I would be a year further toward my goal, and this blog would be transformational for others.

One of the takeaway lessons I have learned from Noah Kagan and his hilarious team at appsumo.com is to just try something… anything.  Fail.  Get up and try something else.  Keep failing until you get it.  Stop being such a baby (my words).  Have fun.  And eat lots of tacos.  I am not sure about the taco part but you go right ahead.  Embrace failure, at least you are doing something!

Secret #3: Add “Like” Buttons

If people like your content and want to share it, it will be very difficult for them to share it if you don’t give them a tool to do so.  So go ahead.  Put up all the little doodads and pushy-button-things you feel comfortable with.  It will be okay.  Some blogging platforms like wordpress and blogger make it very easy to add like and sharing buttons.  If you are unsure how to add a Facebook like button then check out this How To Configure Your Facebook Like Button from the Facebook Developers themselves.  That being said, feel free to “like” this post.

Secret #4: Start Compiling An Email List

Your email list can go with you even if your site crashes.  Your email list is the beginning of your traffic strategy.  If you provide great content and send it to your email list, they may be inclined to share your content with others, naturally growing your email list.  I have personally moved residence several times but I have a couple email addresses that I have had for years. Here is how to start your list:

  • Sign up for an email marketing account.  A couple of good options are Constant Contact and MailChimp.
  • Create a sign-up form from your email marketing account.  Use these instructions for Constant Contact and MailChimp.
  • Put your sign-up form on your blog’s sidebar, about page, and in an obvious place on the main page.
  • It is a great idea to offer a free giveaway for people who subscribe to your list.  Offering an ebook, resource guide, or a free video with great content can generate many more signups then if you do not offer any incentives.

Secret #5: Make a List of Ideas/Topics You Want to Post About

Keeping a simple list handy when you sit down to write will help you when you are feeling stuck about what to write about.  I use google drive to keep track of many things, including post topics, research I have done about passive income, great blogs, etc.  It is free and it goes with you so if you are logging online from a different place, you have access to your documents.

Secret #6: Start Guest Blogging

Guest Blogging gives you an opportunity to reach out to other bloggers, find amazing content, and share your personal brand with them.  I have found a fantastic goodie for you to check out at Kissmetrics, The Ultimate Guide to Blogger Outreach and Guest Blogging.

Build relationships with other great bloggers who are posting similar content.  It will help bust the loneliness that can come with writing epic content and wondering if anyone (chirp, chirp) really even cares??

Go check out Glen at Viperchill.com, I have found this to be an incredibly amazing blog that does a lot of justice to creating epic content, and providing lots and lots of value for its reader.   His posts are very detailed and will leave your head spinning with a lot of actionable information.

Secret #7: Get Rid of Obnoxious Ads

Oh I cannot say this enough.  Do not make your blog look like a blinky, winky, crazy, montage of advertising hell.  It is a complete turnoff and makes you look desperate.  Be classy.  Provide great value for your readers.  This is not to say that you should altogether skip affiliate marketing or advertising, just keep it simple.  Don’t make your blog look like the eccentric person in your community that wears a tin foil hat, a foo-foo skirt, clown makeup with black lip-liner, and a t-shirt that says “The Voices Are Back”.

Part 2…

Stay tuned for “Not So Secret Secrets of Generating Traffic Part 2” coming soon.  I would tell you what Part 2 entails, but then it wouldn’t be a secret.  If you enjoyed this post, please “like” it and share with others.

ImageYou can take action today on any of the ideas in this post.  You can start right now.  I have gotten in the rut of spending way too much time reading about ways to create passive income then taking action on the knowledge I have gained.

First, let me just briefly say why I am on this journey to start a passive income stream.  About a year ago I was introduced to a direct sales company called ACN.  I love ACN and am currently a business owner, although the purpose of this post is not to enroll you  in anything but to inform you.

ACN business owners can provide services you already pay for at a cost effective rate for the consumer and the business owner receives a residual recurring income.  ACN owners can provide internet, satellite, energy, telecommunications, wireless, small business services, home security, and merchant services from well known companies.  This is brilliant.  I am totally sold on the concept of doing work one time and getting paid on it over and over again.  This has reignited the fire in me to be self responsible for my income and to create a legacy income (hint: mylegacyincome) that can be passed down for future generations of my family.

1. Blogging

Maybe I am stuck in the stone age, but my attitude about blogging was “can people really make money blogging??”  The answer is yes, you can.  If you are looking for a get rich quick plan that will propel you into a mansion, then blogging is not for you.  Blogging takes time, effort, and the ability to write content that people actually read.  It is very simple to set up a blog and you can find free blogging platforms at wordpress.com and blogger.com.

Pros:

  • Very simple to get started
  • Can start free
  • Build a relationship with your readers
  • Easy to maintain, no coding needed
  • You can use your blog to promote your own products

Cons:

  • Big time investment (maybe months or even years) to build a community
  • Must spend time keeping it up and contributing/commenting to keep it fresh
  • How will your blog be different from other blogs with the same information?

How you make money:

  • Advertising (private ads, google adsense ads, etc…)
  • Affiliate Links (link to a product or service you are an affiliate for)
  • Selling your own products from your blog.

2. EBooks

An ebook, resource guide, or other information product is a great way to build passive income.  If you are like me, the idea is intriguing but the thought of having to complete an ebook gives me mental images of being strapped to my laptop in a coffee induced state with food stains on my shirt.  Not. A pretty. Picture.  Now that I have done a ton of research on writing ebooks from people who have sold books other then “how to write an ebook” books, I am not intimidated by the process.  In a future blog series I will share with you exactly how to write,  publish and market your ebook.

Pros:

  • It is a great accomplishment and a method of getting future business
  • You can add “author” to your repertoire of titles (ie: Blogger, Author, Mind Ninja)
  • You complete your book and viola: every sale after that is truly passive income
  • Sales and distribution can be fully automated
  • No inventory in your garage 🙂

Cons:

  • You have to write, or pay someone to ghost write
  • If you don’t market your ebook you will have just spent a lot of time for the experience of writing a book

How You Make Money:

  • Sales, sales, sales

3. Freelancing

Take the skills you currently have and use them as a freelancer.  In my resource guide you will find several links to places you can freelance.  If you have not discovered Fiverr.com it can be very amusing. I have lost much time looking at gigs of people dressed like a monkey/chicken/nun/clown/banana singing happy birthday.

Pros:

  • You can leverage your current skills or expertise where people are looking for your help.
  • With platforms like Elance, you are able to market your skills in a global environment.

Cons:

  • You are competing against other freelancers.  Do NOT use this as a reason to low-ball your fees.  You do not want to discourage a potential employer from hiring you because your fees are too low.
  • This is not a passive income, but it may provide lifelong connections with potential employers.

How You Make Money:

  • You get hired, you complete a job, you get paid.
